Digital Camera Guide

Digital Camera Guide

Digital cameras can be pretty scary if you don’t know what to expect.  If you are considering buying your first ever digital camera it is worth finding out as much as you can about it beforehand.  By doing this you will be able to make a much more informed buying decision, and get more out of your chosen camera when you finally unpack it from its box for the first time.

What exactly are top digital cameras?

A digital camera allows you to do away with the rolls of film that old style cameras use.  Instead of using film, a digital camera uses a memory card that slots into a specific part of the camera.  This can hold hundreds of photos in one hit, depending on what size it is.

If you take a picture you don’t like, you can instantly delete it from the memory card.  Alternatively you can pop out the memory card and slot it into your computer or printer.  This allows you to take a look at your pictures before deciding which ones you want to print out.

You can even take your memory card straight into a shop to get them to print your photos professionally for you.  The choice is yours.

All about megapixels

Basically speaking, the higher the number of megapixels you have on your digital camera, the better the quality of photos you will be able to take.

Cheaper cameras tend to have less in the way of megapixels, whereas professional quality digital cameras will have a high number of megapixels that enable you to take professional quality photographs.

ISO numbers, apertures and shutter speeds

The ISO number relates to how well or badly the film reacts to light.  This is an advanced feature on some digital cameras, since they don’t work with an actual roll of film.  In this case the ISO number relates to how efficient the sensors are on that camera, in terms of how it reacts to light.  If the ISO number is lower, this means it needs more light.

The aperture is the hole through which your photo will be taken.  The wider that hole gets, the more light is allowed through it.  Most advanced digital cameras will allow you to adjust the aperture of the camera to get different results with your pictures.

The shutter speed can also change according to what is wanted.  For example the slower the shutter speed is, the more light comes in.  The faster the speed, the less light is allowed in.  Moving objects can appear very differently in the finished photo depending on the shutter speed you used to take the shot.

If you are going to buy a new digital camera, make sure you ask all the questions you need to ask when you are ready to make your purchase.  This will lead to you getting the best possible camera for your needs.
